Windows 7 Defender

Article by Marc Liron - Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience)

Windows Defender is software that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software by detecting and removing known spyware from your computer.

Windows Defender features Real-Time Protection, a monitoring system that recommends actions against spyware when it's detected, minimizes interruptions, and helps you stay productive.

It offers for free:

- Spyware detection and removal

- Improved Internet browsing safety

- Protection against the latest threats

To access Windows Defender simply type Windows Defender into the start menu search box and a link will appear in the results... (See video below).

So What is spyware?

Spyware is a general term used to describe software that performs certain behaviours such as advertising, collecting personal information, or changing the configuration of your computer, generally without appropriately obtaining your consent first.

Spyware is often associated with software that displays advertisements (called adware) or software that tracks personal or sensitive information.

In Windows 7, Windows Defender has got a new interface as seen in Fig 1.0

You have the option to set when Windows Defender is going to automatically scan your system. Simply click the Tools option and a new screen will appear - see Fig 1.1

I recommend you set it to when your computer will actually be on and running. It will then run silently in the background. Simple.

Please Note:

Having the built in Windows Defender running in the background is an excellent start, but I suggest you go ahead and download/install the new Microsoft Security Essentials as it offers far more protection and it is also free.
